“Microsoft help craziness that throws you out on the web.”

“Sometimes Microsoft works.”

“Just the driver.”

“Malware is coming from inside the house”

“We recommend: None.”

“Don’t click on stuff”

“Free pizza!”

“Another brick in the wall.”

All em-dashes — were made by the common number of human fingers on the keypad—ALT+0151—no A.I. was involved in their creation.

3.5mm and 1/4″

A headphone jack in an audio system is 1/4″. But a headphone or speaker jack in a personal computer is 3.5 mm.

Bloatware

Add-on programs that clutter new computers. Some folks hold Shift and click Restart to get into Troubleshooting and Reset the operating system on their new computers to get rid of the extra programs.

Bricking

When a device is being updated, its firmware need to start the machine is only partially rewritten, leaving it in a vulnerable in-between state. If power is lost at that moment, the device can be left with incomplete, corrupted software it can’t recover from — making it as useful as a brick.

BIOS (UEFI)

BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, is chip-based software that starts your computer and hands control to the operating system. It has lbeen replaced by UEFI, the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, which offers a graphical interface. Both firmware, which is software embedded in a chip that controls hardware.

Broken Profile

A broken profile error means your Windows user account has become corrupted, so Windows can’t load your personal settings and files. You’re typically dumped into a temporary profile where nothing saves, until the original is repaired or rebuilt.

Boot Loop

When your computer gets stuck repeatedly restarting because it can’t successfully complete the startup process. Each attempt to boot fails triggering another restart; an endless cycle until the underlying cause is fixed.

Bitlocker

BitLocker is a Windows encryption feature that locks your entire drive with a alphanumeric code or key when not logged in as an registered user.

Dark Pattern

A dark pattern is a deceptive design trick using habit or inattention built into a user interface that manipulates you into doing something you didn’t intend, like signing up for a subscription or sharing more data than you meant to.
